New York and New Jersey launched investigations Friday into the Roman Catholic Church’s handling of sex abuse allegations. Three weeks after a grand jury report found rampant sexual abuse of children by priests in Pennsylvania since the 1940s, Catholic leaders in New York and New Jersey said they would cooperate with authorities. The New York Archdiocese confirmed it received subpoenas and vowed to work with state Attorney General Barbara Underwood.
Nine people died and at least 30 others remained missing after a powerful earthquake hit northern Japan early Thursday morning. The 6.7 magnitude quake struck Japan’s northernmost main island, Hokkaido, at 3:08 a.m. local time, triggering dozens of landslides and widespread disruption of infrastructure. Officials said more than 350 people were injured.
Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of the late evangelist Billy Graham, announced this week she was diagnosed with breast cancer in August. She said she is having surgery Sept. 18 and asked for prayer. Lotz described in a blog post both the initial discouragement and the ways she has seen God speak to her since the diagnosis. “Pray for God to heal me in whichever way He deems would bring Him the most glory,” she wrote.
