Unpaid interns win case against movie studio

For students looking to break into difficult fields, internships have traditionally been the go-to option, even if they are unpaid. But the future of unpaid internships is uncertain after a federal judge in New York ruled this week that Fox Searchlight Pictures violated minimum wage and overtime laws by not paying interns who worked on the production of the 2010 movie Black Swan.

Oklahoma man challenges 'sacred' license plate

Pastor Keith Cressman is suing the state of Oklahoma, claiming the standard Oklahoma license plate violates his freedom of speech. The Oklahoman reports that a lower court judge threw out the case, but an appeals court revived the suit on Tuesday.

North Caucasus insurgency threatens Russian Olympic security

Russian officials are beefing up security in preparation for the 2014 Sochi games, the first Olympics to take place practically on the doorstep of an active guerrilla war. Intelligence analysts and regional experts say the Islamic insurgency raging across the North Caucasus mountains near the seaside resort of Sochi presents daunting threats.

Matthew Henman, a senior analyst at Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Center in London, said the insurgents could try to “upstage the games with some kind of attack, which would provide a kind of bad PR for the Russian government.”
