France links Iran to alleged terror attack

French authorities on Tuesday froze Iran’s Intelligence Ministry assets related to internal security and the assets of two Iranians in response to an alleged bomb plot that was thwarted earlier this year. The French interior, economy, and foreign ministers said in a joint statement that there was a plan to detonate explosives at a June rally near Paris by the People’s Mujahadeen of Iran, an Iranian exile group. “This act of an extreme gravity envisioned on our territory could not go without a response,” the statement read.

Physics Nobel shared by U.S., Canada, and France

The Nobel Prize in physics was awarded Tuesday to an international trio of scientists for their work on lasers. American Arthur Ashkin of Bell Laboratories in New Jersey became the oldest Nobel laureate ever at age 96. Canadian Donna Strickland of the University of Waterloo is only the third woman to have won a Nobel Prize in physics—the last was Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963, and the other was Marie Curie in 1903. The third laureate in physics this year is Frenchman Gerard Mourou of the Ecole Polytechnique and the University of Michigan.

U.S. replaces NAFTA with new trade deal

The United States and Canada reached a trade agreement on Sunday, just hours ahead of a U.S-imposed midnight deadline and after weeks of difficult negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump at a news conference Monday called the agreement “the most modern, up-to-date, and balanced trade deal in the history of our country,” adding that he planned to sign the pact by the end of November and then submit it to Congress.
