UNC Charlotte student sacrificed life, saved others

The body of a University of North Carolina at Charlotte student who was killed confronting a gunman will receive a police escort back to his hometown on Thursday. Riley Howell, a 21-year-old from Waynesville, N.C., charged and tackled a shooter who opened fire in his classroom on the UNC Charlotte campus on Tuesday. He knocked the assailant down and bought enough time for the first police officer to enter the classroom and capture the suspect, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney. Synagogue shooter pleads not guilty

At his first court appearance on Tuesday, John T. Earnest pleaded not guilty to murder and attempted murder in the shooting at a San Diego synagogue that killed one person and injured three others on Saturday. Earnest also pleaded not guilty to setting fire to a mosque last month in Escondido, Calif. San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan told reporters that something happened to Earnest’s gun that kept him from continuing the attack at the synagogue.

Officer convicted in woman’s shooting death

A jury on Tuesday convicted a Minneapolis police officer of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman. Mohamed Noor shot and killed 40-year-old Justine Damond, a dual Australian and U.S. citizen, in July 2017. Damond had called 911 to report a crime just before the shooting. Noor and his partner arrived outside her home to investigate.
