Saudi King Salman announced an overhaul of top governmental posts on Thursday. The new positions span the kingdom’s two supreme councils that oversee economy and security matters, both headed by the king’s son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The crown prince maintains his roles as both prime minister and defense minister.

Terror attack at Afghan welfare office kills 40

A Monday suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, killed 40 people and injured 29 others, the health ministry said Tuesday. At least three gunmen stormed a public welfare building after another attacker detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside. The gunmen held the building for eight hours against security forces. Some employees barricaded themselves inside while police evacuated more than 350 others. No group has claimed responsibility the attack. A second suicide bomber killed six people in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on Tuesday.

Immigrant child dies in U.S. custody

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has ordered medical checks on all children in its custody, focusing on those younger than 10, after the death of an 8-year-old Guatemalan boy, the agency said Tuesday.

Felipe Gómez Alonzo had been in custody for crossing the U.S. southern border illegally with his father, Agustin Gomez, since Dec. 18. An agent first noticed the boy had a cough and “glossy eyes” around 9 a.m. on Monday. He was hospitalized twice and died just before midnight. CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan in a statement said the child’s death was a “tragic loss.”
