Baby stolen from womb of slain Chicago woman

A Chicago woman has been charged with murdering a pregnant mother and cutting the infant from her womb, police said Thursday. The suspect apparently wanted to raise another child two years after her adult son died of natural causes, investigators said. Police accused Clarisa Figueroa, 46, of luring 19-year-old Marlen Ochoa-Lopez to her house with an advertisement for free baby clothes and then strangling her.

A new study published last week by a Nobel Prize–winning astrophysicist could shake up what scientists thought they knew about the origins of the universe. New research from Adam Riess of Johns Hopkins University strengthens his previous claims that the universe could be expanding faster than it used to and be much younger than mainstream scientists believed.

Right to life becomes law in Alabama

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed nearly complete protections for the unborn into law on Wednesday, prompting immediate and severe backlash from abortion proponents. Sponsors of the law, which makes performing an abortion at any stage of pregnancy a felony punishable by prison time for abortionists—but not for mothers—have said the goal is to give the U.S. Supreme Court a chance to overturn its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which led to legalized abortion nationwide.
