White House counsel Don McGahn steps down

Wednesday was Don McGahn’s last day as White House counsel, numerous White House sources confirmed. McGahn was a top election lawyer and served as general counsel for President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. He was a major player in the president’s judiciary nominations, including the selections of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, and was also a point of contact for special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

Rising death tolls and armed looters after Michael

Florida officials have raised the confirmed death toll in the state from Hurricane Michael to 16 people, with 10 more deaths in Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Communities in the Florida Panhandle still reeling from the strongest hurricane to hit the continental United States in 50 years are now facing a new danger: armed looters. Authorities in Bay County, Fla., say they have arrested about 10 suspected looters a night since Michael made landfall one week ago.

Judge tosses Stormy Daniels’ defamation case

A federal judge on Monday dismissed a defamation lawsuit by Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels, against President Donald Trump, saying the president’s speech constituted “‘rhetorical hyperbole’ against a political adversary,” and it would “hamper the office of the President” to label it defamation. Clifford sued Trump in April for a tweet in which he suggested she was lying about having an affair with him. She had released a sketch of a man she said threatened her not to reveal the alleged affair.
