Roads are blocked and airports are closed while trucks carrying food, fuel, and medical supplies are stuck outside the borders of the Tigray region in Ethiopia. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent federal troops to the region’s capital in a bid to end the two-week war.

More than 40,000 people were in shelters in Nicaragua as the storm swept through the country. After making landfall on Monday as a Category 4 Hurricane, Iota dropped to a tropical storm by midday on Tuesday. The storm passed 25 miles south-southwest of the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, flooding homes and rivers. Forecasters said Iota would move across parts of southern Honduras and El Salvador before it dissipates later on Wednesday.

Iota ripped off the roof of a makeshift hospital and toppled electricity poles as it made landfall late on Monday in Nicaragua. The Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour hit the coast some 15 miles south of where Hurricane Eta touched down on Nov. 3. Authorities evacuated about 40,000 people to shelters ahead of the storm, while Honduras moved about 80,000 people to safety.

A week after Pfizer’s announcement that its COVID-19 vaccine showed overwhelmingly positive results in trials, Moderna released preliminary data on Monday showing its shot appears to be 94.5 percent effective. The company could apply for emergency use approval within weeks.

Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis, Michigan, and Philadelphia have closed classrooms or nixed plans to hold in-person classes later this year due to rising coronavirus case counts and hospitalizations. New York City gave students the option to come back in person this fall, but Mayor Bill De Blasio said he may suspend in-person learning if the city’s COVID-19 positivity rate reaches toward 3 percent. On Saturday, it was 2.47 percent.

The storm briefly regained hurricane status over the Gulf of Mexico. But Eta again weakened to a tropical storm on Wednesday afternoon off Florida’s southwestern coast with maximum sustained winds of about 70 mph.

An explosion wounded three people at a cemetery in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday as U.S. and European officials commemorated the anniversary of the end of World War I.

Who carried out the attack? It’s unclear, but a stabbing last month in the same city wounded a guard at the French Consulate. Three other attacks attributed to Muslim extremists have targeted France in recent weeks. A U.K. national, a Greek policeman, and a Saudi security officer were injured on Wednesday. About 20 people of different nationalities attended the ceremony.
