Afghans killed in U.S. drone strike

The United States confirmed that a drone attack in the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan on Thursday likely struck some civilians. Local officials said at least 30 pine nut farmers died and 40 others sustained injuries in the attack. The strike targeted an Islamic State hideout, but the United States will work with local officials “to determine whether there was collateral damage,” said Col. Sonny Leggett, spokesman for the American-led coalition in Afghanistan.

Iran stokes tensions over Saudi oil attack

Iran’s foreign minister on Wednesday warned of “all-out war” if Saudi Arabia retaliates for Saturday’s attack on its oil infrastructure. Iran denied involvement in the drone strikes, which temporarily halved Saudi oil production rates. Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN that Iran “won’t blink to defend our territory” if it faces any military confrontation. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that U.S. intelligence has reason to believe Iran was behind the attack. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said an international team of experts was headed to Saudi Arabia to investigate.

Israel still at political impasse after election

An extended political crisis is developing in Israel after a second election yielded another deadlock between the two major political parties. Preliminary results on Wednesday showed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party landed 31 seats in the 120-seat parliament and Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party won 32.
