EU promises aid to Tunisia, Libya in bid to stop extremism

The European Union has agreed to help the Tunisian government fight Islamic extremism in the North African country.

EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday agreed to several cooperative measures with Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid. The agreement follows last month’s beach resort attack in Tunisia that left 38 tourists dead, many EU nationals.

“We have to keep hope alive in a region that faces so many difficulties,” said EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who also said it’s in Europeans’ own interest to assist Tunisia.

Boko Haram ends Ramadan with more killings

As Ramadan, the Muslim season of fasting, ends today with the Friday Eid-al-Fitr celebration, two northeastern Nigerian towns mourn the death of at least 62 people killed in the last 48 hours.

Police say two suicide bombers, an elderly woman and a 10-year-old girl, killed 12 people on Friday morning as many gathered to celebrate the end of Ramadan at two open-air prayer grounds in the town of Damaturu.

Ebola makes a comeback in Liberia

On May 9, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Liberia Ebola-free after 42 days without any new cases.  During the outbreak, the country recorded more than 4,800 deaths.

But a new Ebola death on Sunday, the second since last month, hints Liberia is not yet free from the virus. Liberian Chief Medical Officer Dr. Francis Kateh revealed the country now has six confirmed Ebola cases, including the two deaths, at a Tuesday press briefing.
