ISIS leader rallies fighters in new audio message

Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi called on followers to stand fast in the fight against “infidels” in an audio message released late Thursday. He also encouraged militants to stage more terror attacks. “You soldiers of Islam, supporters of the caliphate everywhere, step up your attacks and include the media centers of the infidels and the headquarters of their ideological war among your targets,” al-Baghdadi said in the 46-minute recording released through the ISIS al-Furqan media outlet.

Kurdish independence vote prompts flight ban

Several Middle Eastern airlines have halted flights to Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, beginning Friday, after Iraqi Kurds voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence. The Kurdish electoral commission on Wednesday said more than 92 percent of voters approved the region’s move for independence from Iraq. Tuesday’s referendum took place across the autonomous region’s provinces despite threats from the Iraqi government and concerns communicated by other international leaders.

Malaysia charges two teens in Islamic school fire

Malaysia has charged two Muslim teenagers with murder for igniting a fire at an Islamic school earlier this month that killed 21 students and three teachers. Police arrested the two boys and five other teenage suspects in connection to the Sept. 14 fire that gutted a dormitory at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah school. Police believe the suspects used cooking gas canisters and petrol to set the dormitory on fire after some of the students living there teased them. The blaze blocked the dormitory’s only exit, trapping the students.
