Saudi Arabia opens Qatar border for pilgrims

Saudi Arabia on Thursday opened its airport and border with Qatar to allow Hajj pilgrims into the country after a monthslong rift that saw the countries sever ties. The announcement came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with a Qatari royal family on Wednesday, the first high-level public encounter since the rift began. Saudi Arabia closed its Salwa border crossing with Qatar at the same time that Egypt, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates also cut ties with the country. They accused Qatar of supporting Iran and Islamic militants—a claim Qatar denies.

Hong Kong orders prison time for pro-democracy activists

A Hong Kong court on Thursday overturned an earlier sentence it deemed too lenient and sentenced Joshua Wong and two other pro-democracy activists to prison. A lower court sentenced Wong and Nathan Law last year to community service and gave the third activist, Alex Chow, a suspended, three-week prison sentence. The three students were found guilty of leading the 2014 rally that launched the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement. But a three-judge panel today decided to stiffen the sentence after the Hong Kong government appealed it as too light.

Sierra Leone calls for help after mudslide kills hundreds

Sierra Leone’s president has called for “urgent support” after a mudslide killed more than 300 people Monday and engulfed hundreds of houses on the outskirts of Freetown, the country’s capital. The Red Cross estimates 600 people are still missing and warned the death toll could rise. Many of the hardest hit communities housed some of the city’s poorest in makeshift settlements. The region’s insufficient drainage system exacerbates flooding during the rainy season. Radio journalist Gibril Sesay said he lost his entire family in the disaster.
