Taliban kills three people in second attack against NATO

A Taliban suicide bomber on Thursday rammed a motorcycle into a NATO convoy in Afghanistan, setting off an explosion that killed three people and injured four others. The attack is the second this week targeting NATO troops. The suicide bomber, dressed in a woman’s burqa outer garment to conceal the explosives, attacked the patrol convoy on Thursday evening, near the town of Qarabagh, 18 miles north of Kabul. The attack killed a soldier from the country of Georgia and two Afghan civilians. The U.S. military on Friday said the attack also injured two U.S.

Al-Qaeda in Mali releases South African hostage

A Mali-based al-Qaeda group recently released a South African hostage after six years in captivity, the South African government confirmed on Thursday. The militant group in 2011 abducted Stephen McGowan along with Swiss national Johan Gustafson, who was freed in June. Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, South Africa’s international relations minister, said McGowan was released without ransom on July 29 and is undergoing a medical evaluation.

U.S. bans travel to North Korea starting Sept. 1

The State Department formally announced on Wednesday a ban on U.S. passport holders traveling to North Korea starting on Sept. 1. The travel alert added that American citizens currently in the communist country should leave before that date, but journalists and humanitarian workers could apply for exemptions from the ban.
