Hundreds of African migrants drown journeying to Europe

Hundreds of African migrants have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to illegally cross to Europe, according to reports from Somalia.  The tragedy comes as Turkey threatens to end a deal with the European Union that could be a start toward resolving the migrant crisis.

“It’s a painful tragedy which reminds us all how important it is for us to discourage our youth from embarking on such high-risk journeys,” Somalia’s president, prime minister, and speaker of Parliament said in a joint statement.

Does cross-border raid signal rise of new armed group in South Sudan?

Gunmen from South Sudan raided a town in western Ethiopia over the weekend, killing 208 people and kidnapping 108 children, officials said on Sunday.

The attack took place Friday in Jakawa, in Ethiopia’s Gambela region, where it shares a border with South Sudan. Getachew Reda, Ethiopia’s communications minister, said on Saturday the assailants belonged to South Sudan’s Murle tribe.

Ghana, Togo next on list of Islamic extremist targets

Islamic extremists in West Africa are planning attacks in Ghana and Togo, following similar attacks in Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast earlier this year, according to a memo leaked from Ghana’s immigration service.
