Taliban peace deal on thin ice

The United States carried out a defensive strike against Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, less than a week after signing a peace agreement with the insurgent group. The strike answered a Taliban assault on Afghan government forces that killed at least 11 soldiers and four civilians, U.S. military spokesman Col. Sonny Leggett said.

Iran’s nuclear capacity grows

Iran has tripled its stockpile of enriched uranium since November. The United Nations reported Tuesday that the Islamic republic has 2,250 pounds of the nuclear material, far more than the 660-pound limit allowed under the 2015 deal with world powers. Iran broke the terms of the deal after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of it in 2018.

International | Clashes between Hindus and Muslims turn violent

Broken glass and charred vehicles litter the streets in the New Delhi neighborhoods where Hindu rioters beat, lynched, and burned Muslims in their homes last week. At least 43 people died and hundreds of others were injured, some by security forces that joined the attackers. India’s ruling Hindu nationalist party received international condemnation for the violence, but the United States continued to support the party’s leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
