Harvest’s James MacDonald takes ‘indefinite sabbatical’

The elders of Harvest Bible Chapel announced Wednesday that Pastor James MacDonald would take an “indefinite sabbatical” from preaching and leadership at the Chicago megachurch while it works to reconcile with past critics. The decision came after the church’s Executive Committee of the Elders held a closed-door meeting on Monday and presented its recommendations to the entire Elder Board Tuesday night.

Russia responds to Pompeo request for access to detained American

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday said the United States wants access to Paul Whelan, an American who was arrested Friday in Russia on espionage charges. Pompeo, speaking from Brazil, said the United States has “made clear to the Russians our expectation that we will learn more about the charges and come to understand what it is he’s been accused of, and if the detention is not appropriate, we will demand his immediate return.” Russian state news agency Tass and private agency Interfax quoted a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Minister saying that access to U.S.

Manchester stabbing suspect held under Mental Health Act

Police in Manchester, England, have detained the lone suspect in a New Year’s Eve stabbing under Britain’s Mental Health Act and are treating the incident as a terrorist act. The attacker is accused of stabbing three people, including a British Transport police sergeant, while shouting Islamic slogans at Manchester’s Victoria Station. Police have yet to identify the 25-year-old man who was arrested at the scene and later examined by medical personnel and have searched his Manchester home for evidence.
