Storm moves inland, heads north

Isaias made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., just after 11 p.m. EDT on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, causing flooding and several home fires. Its maximum sustained winds reached 85 mph. But as the storm center moved inland, it was downgraded to a tropical storm with 70 mph winds and an increasing threat of tornadoes in southeastern Virginia and northward.

Congressman John Lewis dies

In 1965, police knocked the then-25-year-old civil rights leader to the ground and fractured his skull as he led hundreds of protesters across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. Nationally televised images of the incident, which became known as “Bloody Sunday,” helped spur opposition to racial segregation. John Lewis, who died on Friday at age 80, later turned to politics and went on to serve 33 years in Congress.

Theologian J.I. Packer dies

He had one of the tersest definitions of Christian belief—“God saves sinners.”—and was best known for one of the most readable books on that subject, Knowing God. J.I. Packer, who died on Friday just five days short of his 94th birthday, was a lifelong Anglican and a Puritan scholar who was highly regarded in Reformed circles. He started his ministry in his native England and later moved to Canada but had his greatest influence in the United States.
