North Carolinians assess damage from Dorian

Residents along North Carolina’s Outer Banks awoke Saturday to clear skies, receding floodwaters, and a better look at the damage left by Hurricane Dorian the day before. Ocracoke Island, where about 800 people waited out the Category 1 storm, appeared to be the hardest hit of the barrier islands, with floodwaters invading the first floors of most homes. The U.S. Coast Guard ferried assistance to the island and airlifted out those in distress.

Al Forte believes in the power of prayer and wants others to join him in petitioning God. He could have tweeted his message, but the 76-year-old Stamford, Conn., resident instead lets his feet do the talking. For more than a decade, Forte has walked hundreds of miles wearing a “Pray 4 Peace” T-shirt while handing out cards with a photo of six soldiers huddled together praying that asks, “They pray for peace.

Star quarterback shocks NFL, retires at age 29

Andrew Luck said constant injuries have taken the joy out of playing professional football. “For the last four years or so, I’ve been in this cycle of injury, pain, rehab … and it’s been unceasing, unrelenting,” the Indianapolis Colts quarterback said following his team’s preseason loss to the Chicago Bears Saturday night. Luck struggled through the 2015 and 2016 seasons and missed the entire 2017 campaign with shoulder problems.
