I remember my first encounter with a weekend warrior. As I pulled out from the cul-de-sac of my parents' suburban Phoenix home, I turned to see a grizzled biker grinning at me from atop an idling mountain of chrome. A brief flash of panic tightened my chest that such a character-decked out in leather jacket, pants, and riding boots, a bandanna covering his unwashed hair and a grizzly 5 o'clock shadow dusting his face-was looking directly at me!

Much like the movies awarded in recent years, the 2006 Academy Awards did not prove to be a big draw with audiences. The telecast managed to show a slight increase-2 percent over last year's low ratings-but with only 23.3 percent of U.S. households tuning in, it nonetheless continued a ratings slump the Oscars have experienced since 2004.

Movie | Astronaut Farmer makes much of failure and family

Those looking for a Rocky-style tale of overcoming the odds, albeit with a rocket instead of knockout punch, will likely be disappointed by The Astronaut Farmer (rated PG for thematic peril), a quiet, thoughtful film that dwells as much on the value of family as it does on the importance of dreams.
