Police close investigation into Las Vegas shooting

Law enforcement officials in Las Vegas announced Friday that they have closed their investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, but they could not explain what drove a gunman to unleash a hail of gunfire from a hotel room that killed 58 people and wounded hundreds more. An extensive investigation found no evidence of a conspiracy or a second gunman. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Stephen Paddock was “an unremarkable man” who showed signs of a troubled mind leading up to the Oct. 1 shooting into a concert crowd of 22,000 people.

Pompeo presses Turkey for Brunson’s release

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pressed Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday for the release of detained American pastor Andrew Brunson. The two met on the sidelines of a Southeast Asian security conference in Singapore, two days after the Trump administration slapped sanctions on Turkey’s justice and interior ministers over the case.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team and the White House have restarted negotiations for prosecutors to interview President Donald Trump, a person briefed on the proposal said Thursday. Mueller has offered format changes and to limit some questions. Trump has publicly expressed willingness to be interviewed, but a deal is uncertain.
