Officer who shot 911 caller sentenced

A former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murder was sentenced Friday to 12½ years in prison for the shooting of an unarmed woman who had called 911. He apologized in court for “taking the life of a perfect person.”

Mohamed Noor, 33, was convicted in April of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the July 2017 death of Justine Ruszczyk Damond. Noor shot Damond when she approached his squad car in the alley behind her home.

Russia tests hypersonic weapon

Russian President Vladimir Putin oversaw a test Wednesday of a new hypersonic glide vehicle, declaring that the weapon is “invulnerable to intercept” and will ensure Russia’s security for decades to come. The Avangard protectile, to enter service next year, reportedly can carry either nuclear or conventional weapons.

Ginsburg undergoes lung cancer surgery

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had surgery on Friday in New York to remove two malignant growths from her left lung, the Supreme Court said. It’s Ginsburg’s third bout with cancer since she joined the court in 1993. The court said doctors found “no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body” and no additional treatment is planned, though the 85-year-old will remain in the hospital for a few days. The growths were found during tests Ginsburg had after she fractured three ribs in a fall on Nov. 7. She is being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
