Utah man freed from Venezuelan jail after secret negotiations

President Donald Trump late Saturday welcomed to the White House a Utah man held without trial in a Venezuelan jail for two years. Venezuelan officials said they freed 26-year-old Joshua Holt in a goodwill gesture to promote dialogue and mutual respect between the two antagonistic governments. Holt had traveled to Caracas in 2016 to marry a fellow Mormon he met online while trying to improve his Spanish.

Ireland votes to end protections for unborn babies

A leading Irish pro-life group admitted defeat Saturday in its effort to keep the country’s protections for unborn children. Two exit polls taken Friday indicate about 70 percent of voters opted to repeal the Eighth Amendment to the country’s constitution, which granted unborn babies the same legal rights as their mothers. The law effectively prevented all abortions except when the mother’s life was in danger.

North, South Korea meet to discuss stalled U.S. summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to a border village Saturday to meet South Korean leader Moon Jae-in, the second time in a month the two leaders have held face-to-face talks. As they did before, Kim and Moon discussed the planned denuclearization summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, but they also talked about ways to continue their own peace initiatives if the meeting doesn’t happen.
