In 2019, a Christian pregnancy center moved into two sand-colored buildings on a shaded lot off the interstate in Austin, Texas. Those buildings previously housed the flagship location of an abortion business, but a competitive lease offer from the pro-life group forced the abortion mill out. Since then, the pro-life pregnancy care center now known as The Source has offered free medical and counseling services to women in the Texas capital.

According to the adage known as Murphy’s Law, “If something can go wrong, it will.” It’s the concept of entropy applied to the universe, a reminder that things tend toward disorder. In an opening scene of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller Interstellar, though, Matthew McConaughey’s science-minded character reassures his daughter Murphy that she’s not named after something bad. “Murphy’s law doesn’t mean something bad will happen,” he says. “What it means is that what can happen will happen, and that sounds just fine to us.”

Bridget Van Means, the head of a pregnancy center in St. Louis, has seen numerous ambulances pull up to the Planned Parenthood facility about a half-mile down the street. She said the abortion center gave emergency vehicles a stand-down notice to keep their sirens off when arriving at the facility. Planned Parenthood staff would wheel out women covered in white sheets. Van Means said the facility had about 75 ambulance visits in about nine years, illustrating its “total disregard for these women’s health.”

In 1977, Melissa Ohden was born in St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, after soaking in a toxic solution intended to scald her to death inside her mother’s womb. Most babies aborted by the saline infusion method die after two to three days. But Ohden soaked in the saline solution for five days and was still alive when the abortionist induced her mother’s labor. According to accounts that Ohden heard later, one nurse demanded that Ohden be left in the hospital room to die. But a tall, blond nurse picked her up and rushed her to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision led to the legalization of abortion nationwide, the pro-life movement has grown and developed in several directions: political and legal groups, pregnancy care centers that serve abortion-vulnerable women and babies, and direct action such as sit-ins and blockades at abortion centers.

Two days before last month’s March for Life, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos spoke at Colorado Christian University’s annual president’s dinner.

In a beige room across the street from the Virginia Capitol in Richmond on Jan. 23, the Senate Education and Health Committee considered legislation that would end some of the state’s protections for the unborn. Under the bill, the state would no longer require that women obtain an ultrasound or wait 24 hours before getting an abortion.
