Planned Parenthood drops suit against ultrasound law

Women in Indiana will have to have an ultrasound 18 hours before getting an abortion starting in January 2021. Vice President Mike Pence signed the law in 2016 when he was the state’s governor, but a federal judge and an appeals court blocked its enforcement in 2017. State Attorney General Curtis Hill, a Republican, announced Thursday that Planned Parenthood withdrew its suit against the ultrasound rule.

Firefighters stretched thin in California

An unprecedented 11,000 lightning strikes in the state over three days likely are responsible for many of the blazes in Northern and Southern California and the Sierra Nevada mountains. The wildfires have killed at least five people, destroyed 175 buildings, and injured 33 people. Firefighters said supplies are scarce, and some have worked 72-hour shifts. “We’ve never seen this level of draw-down,” Marin County Fire Chief Jason Weber said about the state’s resources required to fight the fires.

Bannon pleads not guilty to fraud charges

Federal prosecutors allege the fiery former White House adviser and three of his associates diverted hundreds of thousands of dollars from an online fundraising campaign to their own pockets. Steve Bannon pleaded not guilty in federal court in New York on Thursday, and a judge released him on a $5 million bond with restricted travel.
