Four Minneapolis police officers fired after man’s death

A video taken by a bystander showed a white Minneapolis police officer pressing his knee on an African American man’s neck for several minutes during an arrest on Monday night. The man, identified by family members as George Floyd, stopped moving and later died. The FBI and state agencies are investigating the incident. The four officers involved in the arrest, including Derek Chauvin, who was the officer on top of Floyd according to his attorney, lost their jobs on Tuesday.

Trump threatens to move GOP convention

Charlotte, N.C., could lose the Republican National Convention if the state’s Democratic governor can’t guarantee a full-capacity venue, President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday. The party has scheduled its nominating convention for Aug. 24–27 at the Spectrum Center, home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets. Gov. Roy Cooper’s office said it was working with GOP officials to determine whether it is possible to hold the convention as scheduled during the coronavirus pandemic. Georgia Gov.

U.S. bans travel from Brazil

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Brazil has nearly quadrupled to close to 375,000 since the end of April. In response, the United States on Sunday announced a ban on travelers from the South American country. National security adviser Robert O’Brien said the restrictions probably would be temporary.
