Jobless claims continue to fall

WASHINGTON—The number of weekly unemployment applications has dropped below 1 million for the first time since early March. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Thursday report revealed 881,000 new claims for jobless benefits last week, and 1 million fewer Americans are receiving state unemployment than in the week before. Economists say the unemployment rate is slowly returning to normal, but the level of new applications remains higher than at any time in the report’s history before the pandemic.

Mississippi reveals proposed replacement flag

A state commission considered nearly 3,000 designs for a new Mississippi flag to succeed the previous version featuring the Confederate battle flag. Commissioners approved a design on Wednesday called the “In God We Trust” flag. It will now go before Mississippi voters in November for approval.

Germany confirms Navalny poisoned by nerve agent

The poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Britain in 2018 set off a diplomatic crisis. On Wednesday, German officials said the same Soviet-era chemical weapon was used on Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who remains in serious condition in a Berlin hospital. German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on the Russian government to explain the incident: “He was meant to be silenced, and I condemn this in the strongest possible manner.”
