Catholics around the world are calling for an independent investigation into sexual abuse by the U.S. Catholic hierarchy after a grand jury report released this week detailed horrific allegations against priests in Pennsylvania. The 18-month investigation revealed more than 300 “predator priests” raped and molested more than 1,000 child victims, all identified from hidden church records. Those numbers are likely understated due to destroyed records and silent victims.

Houston man gets death for ‘honor killings’

A Houston jury Tuesday sentenced to death a Jordanian Muslim immigrant convicted of two honor killings. Last month, jurors found Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan, 60, guilty of the 2012 shooting deaths of his daughter’s American husband, Coty Beavers, and his daughter’s best friend, Gelareh Bagherzadeh. Prosecuters said Irsan conspired to kill the two after his daughter, Nesreen Irsan, married Beavers and converted from Islam to Christianity. Bagherzadeh reportedly encouraged the marriage.

Kavanaugh hearings scheduled

The U.S. Senate will begin confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Sept. 4, according to a statement Friday by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The review will last up to four days and will begin that Tuesday with opening remarks from senators on the committee. Kavanaugh, 53, will face questions Wednesday, Sept. 5, followed by testimony from legal experts and people who know him. The announcement comes one day after the Senate Judiciary Committee published 5,700 pages of material from Kavanaugh’s time in the George W.
