Pastor James Coates of GraceLife Church in Alberta, Canada, turned himself over to Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Tuesday. He and his congregation had consciously disregarded Alberta Health Services orders to keep in-person church services at 15 percent capacity as a coronavirus prevention measure. Now he is in jail, where he will remain until trial unless he agrees to comply with Alberta’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Forces lock down D.C. for Inauguration Day

In northern Virginia, the signs along the highway warn, “Stay Safe! Avoid D.C. January 19-21.” The lighted signs usually remind drivers to buckle up or not to text and drive. This week, they told residents not to attend Joe Biden’s inauguration as 46th president of the United States.

Police blockades and checkpoints surrounded the nation’s capital, where the National Guard has deployed about 25,000 armed troops—five times the official number of U.S. forces stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

Sarah Burnett, a 29-year-old mother of three from Shawnee, Okla., came to Washington this week to demonstrate for free and fair elections. Her political interests lay dormant during much of her 20s, but that changed when coronavirus lockdowns hurt the video production company she runs with her husband and kept her from attending the Baptist church she loves. She launched a Facebook page that urged Christians to engage in politics and protect their liberty.
