'You can't know something until you know it'

In college I had a mentor who taught me many things I cannot put into words. But one of those things she put into words herself, and I have never forgotten them: “You can’t know something until you know it.”

By this I think she meant I should be patient with myself, and even with the person I used to be, taking into account that no one is born knowing everything. Wisdom comes from experience. We only get experience by living, so when we are young we sometimes do not yet know how to be wise. If you understand this, you can give yourself and others grace.

Our baby was still an unborn mystery of kicks and rolled sonogram images two weeks ago when I wrote her a note right next to the Star Wars ticket stub I taped into my notebook. “Star Wars is here, Bravery Grace,” I wrote, having seen the film’s premiere the night before. “But where are you?”

Being a Christian in a dark world

As a teenager, I used to imagine fondly what it would be like to marry a pastor. I thought the pastor’s wife package came with everything I could possibly desire: endless opportunities for hospitality, rigorous intellectual conversations, and—best of all—the chance to go to church all the time. In real life, I married a musician-writer-scholar employed by a church, which turned out even better than my preconceived notions of marrying into the cloth. The bulkiest parts of my dream came true, with considerably less drama than that required of the pastorate.
