God’s Not Dead 2 puts Christianity back on trial, but moves the setting from a university philosophy class—where God’s Not Dead transpired—into a courtroom. (Since several characters return in the sequel, viewers unfamiliar with the original film should see it first.) God’s Not Dead 2 (rated PG for thematic elements) unabashedly aspires to prove that Jesus is alive, but also that worthwhile storytelling need not conform to Hollywood’s bawdy blueprint. Real suspense, quality acting, and clean dialogue buttress a plainspoken message.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 opened last weekend, 14 years after its indie predecessor smashed the box office and earned a best screenplay Oscar nomination. Although it reworks some of the original film’s best elements, the sequel still produces an honest, humorous—albeit occasionally suggestive—tribute to marriage and family.

Allegiant adds another disappointing chapter to the Divergent series

Few film series (Star Wars I, II, and III come to mind) have squandered more potential than Divergent. The films’ directors and writers have consistently sacrificed story to style. Moviegoers hoping The Divergent Series: Allegiant–Part 1, the third Divergent installment, would redeem the franchise will likely find the film even more uninteresting and heavy-handed than the first two. (Allegiant–Part 1 opened Friday; Allegiant–Part 2 is scheduled for a March 2017 release.)
