Viewers who expect nothing more of The Huntsman: Winter’s War than a middling adventure-fantasy film won’t be disappointed. The sequel to the 2012 box office hit, Snow White and the Huntsman, misfires many of its cylinders but chugs forward with some entertainment energy. Interesting for a major Hollywood production, though, are hints of grief over the loss of children—even preborn babies.

Midnight Special proves there’s someone left in Hollywood who’s willing and able to draw viewers into an engrossing, carefully crafted story without baiting them with sex and violence. Writer-director Jeff Nichols has made an audience-pleasing movie that rivals M. Night Shyamalan’s best films.

The Boss stoops to a new comedy low

The Boss opened at No. 1 this weekend, narrowly squeezing out Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice atop the box-office charts. Successful comedies vary widely in their ingredients, of course, but writing explicit language into children’s roles and knocking women around for laughs shouldn’t be parts of the recipe.
