Music | Pop-country star Glen Campbell was an example of resilience

On Aug. 8, the pop-country singer and guitarist extraordinaire Glen Campbell lost his much-publicized battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 81. 

Encomiums poured in. “Glen’s music came from an era that will never exist again,” wrote the Marshall Tucker Band’s Doug Gray. “His unique sound and ability to touch his audience was something many musicians can never reach.” “He could do it all,” added the country singer-songwriter Aaron Tippin.

In a recent article titled “Why my guitar gently weeps,” The Washington Post’s Geoff Edgers pulled the lid off what he called the “slow, secret death of the six-string electric.”

Apparently, interest in and sales of rock ’n’ roll’s most iconic instrument have been ebbing for at least a decade. And, if the trend continues, the “guitar gods” (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, et al.) may soon receive an Ozymandian comeuppance.
