Atlanta's shame and disgrace

When a news story would disgust my grandmother she would refer to it as being a "shame and a disgrace." This is the least we can say about the profound mess that is the Atlanta Public Schools system. Riddled with scandal and poorly performing teachers, there is a generation of students whose future is at stake because of the wild antics of adults.

High schools and colleges are flooded with students who confuse busyness with performance. They have been misled to believe that they deserve A's for turning in anything, and that the burden of proof is on the professor to defend why a student has not been "given" an A.

Black church solidarity

Just before Thanksgiving, the leadership of the nine largest historically black denominations announced the launch of The Conference of National Black Churches (CNBC). These evangelical and mainline denominations, representing nearly 30 million churchgoers and 50,000 congregations in the United States, have joined forces to address myriad issues in the black community. The CNBC will hold its first annual consultation titled "For the Healing of Our People," Dec. 7-10 in Washington, D.C.
