The Devil Wears Prada (rated PG-13 for some sensuality), based on a novel by Lauren Weisberger, is a funny and entertaining film that ends up marred by Hollywood conventions. The likeable Anne Hathaway (from the Princess Diaries movies) plays Andy, a young journalism grad eager to land a writing job in New York City. She ends up working for Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the tyrannical head of a Vogue-like fashion magazine.

Superman Returns, and boy does he make an entrance. Fantastically entertaining-and full of delicate balances that allow the film to succeed on adrenaline rushes and romance, whimsy and thought-provoking seriousness-Superman Returns brings the Man of Steel back to theaters after a 19-year hiatus. He was worth the wait.

A new Pixar short precedes Cars in theaters. This has become a tradition with Pixar films (mimicked recently by DreamWorks), with delightful brief animations introducing the main feature. Like the others, the new short, "One Man Band," perfectly encapsulates in just 4-1/2 minutes this preeminent animation studio's ability to dazzle us with artistry and enchant us with simple, poignant stories.
