A great delusion

When perversity proliferates, our very fundamentals perish

A great delusion

(Krieg Barrie)

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is not a feminist screed on inattentive husbands but a 1985 collection of essays by neurologist Oliver Sacks describing his patients’ strange mental conditions. What would the professor make of boys today who think they’re girls and girls who think they’re gender-unaffiliated?

In this shoreless moral landscape of ooze falling through ooze, where droves of youth reject the “binary” classification of male and female, what is to prevent one from mistaking himself for a hat? First came the gay movement, then the post-gay movement. First a boy complained he was trapped in a girl’s body; right behind him will come a boy complaining he is a tree trapped in a man.

The universities are tripping over themselves to accommodate. Six years ago, no student health plan covered “gender reassignment surgery,” and now three dozen do, with 25 others offering related hormone therapy.

University of Pennsylvania leaders, proudly supposing they were in the vanguard of the revolution, got their hats (or could it be their wives?) handed back to them by the class of 2016. Incoming freshmen were indignant, and can you blame them—two dozen gay groups on campus, and not one of them represents their needs! So they added to Queer People of Color and Lambda Alliance a new club called Penn Non-Cis (“cis” meaning gender-biology incompatibility).

Memo to the Penn faculty: When exactly did the tail start wagging the dog and 17-year-olds start lecturing the bearded ones? When did educators become sycophants, and the natural order cease that “gray hair is a crown of glory … gained in a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31)? “Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child …” (Ecclesiastes 10:16).

Psychiatry accommodates by cranking out new categories that barely keep up with the metastasizations. “Homosexual,” move over. Make room for “genderqueer,” “androgyne,” and “non-cisgender.” In 1973, activists removed homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, bible of the American Psychiatric Association. A group of health professionals named B4U-ACT preaches that it is high time to remove the stigma attached to “minor-attracted people.” If Middle America does not yet connect the dots between gay and pedophile, NAMBLA knows full well that it is just as easy for a guy to fall in love with a 17-year-old boy as with an 18-year-old. Age distinctions are the hobgoblins of little minds.

Jesus said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female …” (Matthew 19:4). Why such an obvious statement made to a culture with no gender identity issues? Perhaps Jesus, peering down through the corridors of time, was speaking to you and me, to a day when the very fundamentals would be at issue.

What could possibly go wrong with these modern trends? Is it not true that while the more-liberal-than-thou snub their noses at “Daddy, Mommy, and Baby makes three,” they must sit on our laps to spit in our faces? For who is it but the traditionalist who keeps society’s machinery running so that the others don’t have to? But what happens when perversity proliferates, and there are more of them than of the upright? Then the foundation itself will become Swiss cheese and the house will collapse, and great will be its collapse.

“Save yourselves from this crooked generation,” Peter urged (Acts 2:40). The invitation remains open but the gate is low and the road narrow. This is for our good, because the one who created us—“male and female”—knows the way to health and life. “Perversity” is defined as “the alteration of something from its original course, meaning, or state, to a corruption of what was first intended.” Does it not weary to kick against the goads?

On a recent walk I went past a school in a neighborhood, and heard the children before I could see them. I knew by the sounds at recess that it was an elementary school and not junior high or older. Their voices were still happy, innocent, hopeful. I was struck with sadness to think how children change. What have we hippies done who threw righteousness to the wind? Behold our grandchildren: profoundly confused and not even knowing their right hand from a hat.

Of course one of the primary conditions of being deluded is that the one deluded does not believe that they are deluded.  The only One capable of really convincing us of our delusions is the Spirit of Truth.  He uses both the Word of God and the witnesses of Jesus to do the convincing.  It is not most effective that we simply tell people of their delusions.  Or, as is too common, shout at them that they are deluded.  Just as important, and perhaps even more so, than stating the Truth is living the Truth.  The latter is much more difficult than the former.  Could it be that one of the reasons people today are so easily deluded with regard to their gender is because they have fewer and fewer examples of followers of Jesus who are content, happy and confident in the gender God has given them.  Of course no one will ever legitimately blame anyone else for their own failure to believe God's Word.  But we who claim to follow Jesus Christ have both a high privilege and a deep responsibility to represent Jesus accurately and effectively.  In order for people to be convinced that their own way is wrong they require a balanced and compelling combination of stated Truth and lived example.  In this, Christians need to continually grow.

Actually these days you don't even have to go to the library.    "The penalty for adultery does not include *** with a heathen."  Etc.  It's reminiscent of the Muslim idea of Nikāḥ al-Mutʿah.  But I suspect that Christian Zionists being used to by Talmudic Jews to kill Muslims in general probably know more about one than the other... to the extent that they even know anything about anything in the first place.  You know who you are.

Jesus said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the
beginning made them male and female ..." (Matthew 19:4). Why such an
obvious statement made to a culture with no gender identity issues?I don't remember...   but you'd probably better go back and read the Babylonian Talmud again.

You have to wonder how far people can go with producing an entertaining image of some type of victimization and then
entertaining themselves with the idea that they're progressively
overcoming it in some sort of linear progression that goes back to old
civil rights struggles.   I would say that anything which causes
people to decide that they can no longer afford as much entertainment might
do it. I.e. an economic debtopalypse and the inevitable financial collapse due to epicenters of paper ponzi and corruption like NYC and Washington DC... then, less entertainment?  But if the imagery carved in stone on ancient pyramid schemes in the central "blue states" of ancient cities (as epicenters of the corruption typical to "priests"/bankers) are any measure then people can go for thousands of years living in empires of illusion.  (Never mind all the mounds of skulls at the base of the schemes of debt managed by the priests...)

Bravo, Andree. As a government employee, I receive annual training on sexual harassment and assault prevention. In such courses the instructor reviews the protected classes of people: race, religion, gender,...and disability (physical or mental). At present, gender "identity" or sexual "preference" are not protected classes, but we seem to be moving that direction. I was thinking, however, that I would be amenable to re-defining homosexuality and gender confusion with their pre-1973 APA characterizations as mental disorders/disability. It could be a win-win. Homosexuals and the gender confused could be granted protections against discrimination and so forth, and the rest of our society can be protected from the lie of GLBT...normalcy.It is interesting to me that Dr. Martin Luther King, our nation's civil rights hero, when faced with the issue of homosexuality didn't say, "your time for equality will come." But rather he recognized it as a psychological problem requiring counseling. (Jet Magazine, "Advice for Living" Nov 1957.)

A grade school classmate of mine and I were talking yesterday about our teacher reading the Bible in class every school day. We see today how far our society has gone away from God's word. The theory of evolution comes to mind. Sound reason and true discernment says all these many highly technical life forms had to be created. We as one of those creations are accountable to that creator. I could more understand a debate in the universities over who the creator is, than there is none.

1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good. Psalms 53:1 (KJV)
